What is Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports(PBIS)?
PBIS is a proactive, research-based approach to preventing student behavior problems and achieving social and learning goals.
There are multiple components of PBIS such as:
- Clearly defined behavioral expectations
- Teaching desired behaviors/skills
- Focusing on positive behaviors
- Changing systems
- Altering the environment
- Providing a continuum of supports
- Functional assessment
- Data-based decision making
PBIS has been shown to:
- Reduce office discipline referrals
- Reduce suspensions
- Save istructional time
- Save administrative time
- Improve school climate
- Increase staff satisfaction
- Improve individual students’ behaviors
